The Theatre Company of Saugus presents a Free Summer Workshop on the Development of the Realistic Theatre. On Tuesday evenings at 7:30 during July and August 2008. Please revisit this page for late changes to the workshop schedule or subject matter. The current tentative schedule of workshops is as follows:
July 15: Scientific, philosophical and cultural movements that influenced the development of realism in drama and theatre.
July 22: The Realistic Movement in England and Europe – the works of Ibsen, Chekhov, Strindberg, Shaw, Hauptmann and Gorky.
July 29: The Realistic Movement in America – the works of O’Neill, Belasco, Anderson, Rice, Sherwood, Hellman, Miller, Williams.
August 5: The Creation of the Realistic Theatrical Environment – emphasis on set design, costumes and theatre architecture.
August 12: Performing the Realistic Drama – emphasis on the actor and director.
The Presenters: The coordinator and theatre historian is Professor Emeritus Leonidas (Leo) A. Nickole, former head of the Department of Theatre at Emerson College. Selected other authorities on set design, acting and directing will be included as special guests at the workshops.
The Location: Cliftondale Congregational Church, 50 Essex Street (near Lincoln Avenue), Saugus, Massachusetts. Admission is free.
